Hello. If you own a business, you are probably like me. You have heard more “revolutionary” ideas that will fundamentally change your business that turn out to be more garbage than you can keep track of. Mostly, the only thing that happens in those situations is large checks from your account get cashed into the accounts of the revolutionary idea holders. Then when results don’t happen, all we hear is a bunch of excuses. After all is said and done, you think to yourself, ‘You know, I would have accomplished the same exact thing AND saved a bunch of time by taking that pile of money I just spent and burning it in the parking lot!’

I don’t know about you, but I declare sometimes I think I need to attend seminars and listen to the “experts” speak just to find out exactly what I should NOT do! What I mean is if they say, “Do this”, it means I should probably do the exact opposite. If you are like me, it becomes difficult at times to not get so jaded that opportunities pass by because we have become so cynical from being burned that we begin to not realize what is an opportunity and what is another scam.

Well, I have owned my own business or businesses (or they owned me!) for 19 years of my working life. Those of you in business know exactly what I am talking about. Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart, but when we do manage to get enough things right, the victories are so sweet indeed!

So, how can we begin to more consistently sift out the scams (even well-intended) from good information that really does lead to great opportunities?

Listen to people who have done what you want to do! 

Seek out those people and listen hard! Think about that. Will it make you look differently and ask different questions of the consultants that want to “help” you grow your business? It most certainly will.

Don’t get me wrong. There are great consultants out there, but there are also a whole lot of consultants who failed in business or never were in business that are now in the business of “Coaching” business owners. The same thing applies to seminar “expert” speakers. That really doesn’t make sense, does it?

What is my point anyhow?

I’m getting there. Years ago I wanted an easy way to keep score of the critical items, the information I, as an owner, needed to know in my business relating to sales and marketing. I was dumping a whole lot of money into marketing, and I had sales people who were working those leads.

In my gut I knew some of the advertising was working and some was not.

I also knew some of the salespeople were working well because I had money coming in, but I had a niggling gut feeling that some of them were not quite so profitable. I needed a way to figure all this out, a way to see exactly what and who was profitable for me so that I could adjust my marketing as needed, as well as adjust my sales team and lead assignment as needed.

To condense this down a lot, I could not find anything available that cost less than $30,000 after all the custom programming that would give me what I wanted. So, I ended up having my own software program made – an analytical lead, sales and marketing tracking CRM for business owners!

Why did I and do I care about keeping score?

If you want to grow your business or maximize your profits and minimize your advertising costs, there is NO OTHER WAY TO DO IT! As a matter of fact, if you want to grow your business without some good way of keeping score or tracking the performance of your advertising and sales people you may as well go to Las Vegas and get rid of the money. Think of it! How many people are flying out of Vegas with their pockets loaded? Just look at all the buildings there, and you will know that not a whole lot of money is leaving the city.

The chances of growing your business profitably without tracking are about the same as filling your pockets in Vegas.

The chance? Close to nothing, unless you get super lucky. Most of us understand that it is not LUCK that builds a business; it’s a strategy, a plan with a way to carry out that strategy. Part of that plan and strategy includes having a way to measure.

If you cannot measure it, you cannot manage it.

If, however, you decide to spend that money trying to grow your business without good tracking or keeping score, I am here to tell you that it will be a very, very painful and expensive experience. What qualifies me as someone you should listen to?
