A goldfish is generally an active and dynamic fish. If you find your goldfish just floating lazily, this may be an indication that something is not good. Quick measures should be taken.

Generally, the more costly and exotic a goldfish is, the harder it is to take care of. This is since the more expensive varieties tend to be more delicate to water conditions and they often get sick more easily than less costly goldfish. Abnormal goldfish floating may be due to buoyancy or troubles with their swim bladders. This part is responsible for the fish buoyancy or capability to float. When the swim bladder gets affected, this can have an effect on the goldfish ability to swim. It may swim unsteadily or lose the ability to dive and just keep on floating on the upper portion of your fish tank.

The way you feed your goldfish may cause this type of condition. If this happens, try soaking the fish pellets or flakes prior to feeding your fish. Dry fish pellets or flakes usually stay on the water surface. When your goldfish goes up to eat, they at times swallow unwanted air, which can result in congestion or problems with the bladder. It only needs one ill fish to infect its tank mates.

Unusual goldfish floating can also be caused by the way they were developed and what their primary food sources used to be. Goldfish that came from fish cultivation typically grew up in a very different atmosphere from fish tanks. Their major food source would get from vegetation in the pond. Insects, algae, worms and any other naturally occurring food are the source of food for farm-raised goldfish.

When the goldfish is purchased and delivered to pet shops and fish shops, their atmosphere changes dramatically. Their diet also changes significantly, as they are now fed commercially bought fish food. These processed foods have more protein, carbohydrates, fat, and other vitamins than the food that they were adapted to eating. Commercially available food is also tougher to digest. Indigestion can lead to blocked intestines. Blocked intestines can cause abnormal goldfish floating.

To avert such a situation, make sure to know where your goldfish arrived from. It is essential to find out the environment where they were emerged and raised. This will also give you a hint about how they were fed. To keep your fish healthy, you must try to feed it quite like how they were earlier fed.
